This is a scene from the café La Comedie in central Béziers. I am increasingly drawn to paint people - particularly scenes from everyday life like this. It's not easy to find scenes where the light, colour and composition are right, but I was lucky this particular day. To me oil portrait painting has a real place in documenting aspects of life that are of common human interest. In this painting I am interested in the themes of social space and the passage of time, but I hope that people see other things in the painting because often the artist sees things in a scene that the conscious mind may not really be aware of.
