This is an oil portrait painting of my friend Jean-Luc. He owns a lot of the land around the hamlet of La Voulte which features in a few of my paintings.

When I had finished this painting and stood back to look at it, I heard the thud of the bucket as Jean-Luc let it drop to the ground - it was an eerie feeling.

This has got to be one of the most beautiful places in the world, and I know it means the world to Jean-Luc who has spent nearly every spare moment of his life helping his father to cultivate this land even though he taught full time. Now he is retired from teaching, and his father is sadly no longer alive, he is totally devoted to his life as a viticulturist. This is true devotion to the art of growing the grape and the love of the landscape rather than a love of money. I have heard many struggling farmers, here and in Britain, talk about agriculture as a living part of themselves rather than something they do purely for money. To watch people work as an act of love is a very humbling experience.
